When to Replace Motorcycle Tyres: 7 Signs Indian Riders Shouldn't Ignore

Most riders replace tyres too late, because the tread still looks fine. In India, heat, potholes and months of standing through the monsoon age tyres faster than mileage suggests. Here's how to judge yours. If you're choosing new tyres, see our guide to choosing motorcycle tyres.

The 7 signs

  1. Tread is flush with the wear bars. These are the small raised bars in the grooves. At that point the tyre is done. Sport riders should replace before reaching them, because grip drops off sharply near the end.
  2. The tyre is old, whatever the tread says. Read the last four digits of the DOT code on the sidewall: "2324" means week 23 of 2024. Indian summer heat and UV harden rubber faster. Get tyres over 5 years old inspected every year, and replace them by 10 years at most.
  3. There are deep cracks. Fine surface lines need watching. Cracks you can open with a fingernail, or cracks between tread blocks, mean the tyre should go.
  4. There's a bulge or sidewall damage. This usually follows a pothole. It means the tyre's internal structure is damaged, so replace it immediately and avoid highway speeds until you do.
  5. The profile has squared off. Straight-line commuting flattens the centre, and the bike starts resisting turn-in. Common on NCR expressway runs.
  6. Wear is uneven, cupped or scalloped. The tyre is finished, and something else is wrong, usually suspension or pressure. Fix the cause, or the new tyre will wear the same way.
  7. The bike feels different. A vague front end, a wobble, or less confidence in the wet. Trust the feel and get it checked.

Replace now or keep riding?

What you see What to do
Tread at the wear bars Replace now
Bulge, sidewall cut, or exposed cords Replace now; ride gently
Small puncture in the centre tread Professional repair may be possible within the manufacturer's limits
Puncture on the shoulder or sidewall Replace. Don't plug it
5+ years old, tread fine Yearly inspection
10+ years old Replace
Squared profile, handling affected Replace

Indian conditions that shorten tyre life

  • Heat and sun. Parking in direct sun ages rubber faster. Cover the bike or park in shade.
  • Monsoon storage. A bike left standing for weeks loses pressure and can develop flat spots. Check both tyres before the first post-monsoon ride.
  • Potholes at speed. One hard hit can damage the tyre inside without visible tread damage. Inspect the sidewalls after any big impact.
  • Running under-inflated. This overheats the shoulders and wears them fast. Check pressures cold, weekly.

After replacing

New tyres need a gentle run-in. Our tyre guide covers that, and how to match the tyre to your bike and riding style.

FAQs

How do I read a motorcycle tyre date code?

Look at the last four digits after "DOT": week, then year. For example, "0825" means week 8 of 2025.

Can a punctured motorcycle tyre be repaired?

Only small punctures in the centre tread, done professionally. Shoulder and sidewall punctures mean replacement.

Should I replace both tyres together?

Not necessarily. Replace the worn one, and ideally keep front and rear from the same tyre range.
