Steel Braided Brake Lines: Advantages, and Accossato vs HEL vs RCB

Pull the front brake hard on most stock motorcycles and the lever travels a little further than it should. Part of that travel is not your pads or your caliper. It is the rubber brake hose swelling under pressure. Stainless steel braided brake lines fix that, and they are one of the most cost-effective braking upgrades you can make on any bike, from a 300cc commuter to a Hayabusa.

Here is what they actually do, who they are for, and how the three brands we work with at Pathpavers — Accossato Racing, HEL Performance and RCB (Racing Boy) — compare.

Why rubber brake hoses hold your brakes back

When you squeeze the lever, the master cylinder pushes brake fluid through the hose to the caliper. A rubber hose expands slightly under that pressure. The expansion soaks up some of your input before it reaches the pads. The result is a soft, spongy lever and less precise control.

It gets worse with time and heat. Rubber ages, absorbs moisture and softens. On a hard ride, a long downhill or a track day, hot fluid makes the swelling more noticeable, exactly when you need consistent braking most.

What a stainless steel braided brake line is

A braided line has a PTFE (Teflon) inner tube that carries the fluid, wrapped in a tight stainless steel braid that stops it from expanding, and usually finished with a protective PVC cover. The fittings at each end are machined and crimped (swaged) onto the hose.

The advantages

  • Firmer, more consistent lever. The braid stops the hose ballooning, so more of your squeeze goes into clamping the disc.
  • Better feel and modulation. You can feel exactly how much brake you are using, which matters for trail braking, emergency stops and riding in the wet.
  • Consistent under heat. PTFE handles high temperatures far better than rubber, so the lever does not go soft as the brakes heat up.
  • Longer life. Rubber hoses are generally treated as a service item and replaced every few years. A good braided line is a long-term fit.
  • Resistance to abrasion and corrosion. The steel braid and stainless fittings stand up to road grime, heat and weather better than rubber and zinc-plated parts.
  • Compatible with standard brake fluids (DOT 4 / 5.1 — always follow your manufacturer's specification).
  • Looks. Colour-matched hoses and polished or anodised fittings make a front end look finished.

One thing braided lines do not do: they will not turn weak pads or a tired master cylinder into race brakes. Think of them as the part that lets the rest of your braking system work properly. Pair them with fresh fluid and good pads for the full effect.

Accossato Racing — modular, made to fit any bike

Accossato is an Italian racing-component maker, and its brake hoses use an aeronautical-grade braid. The big advantage is the modular system: you pick the hose length and then the banjo fittings that suit your setup — straight, 25°, 45° or 90° low-bend banjos, or a fixed M10x1 male fitting.

That makes Accossato the best choice when:

  • There is no ready-made kit for your bike.
  • You have changed handlebars, risers, a master cylinder or calipers and the stock line length no longer works.
  • You are building a custom or track bike and want exact routing.

Hoses are available at Pathpavers in 300 mm, 325 mm, 350 mm, 375 mm and 400 mm lengths in multiple colours, with matching straight, 25°, 45° and 90° banjos, plus a fixed M10x1 male fitting.

HEL Performance — bolt-on kits with a lifetime warranty

HEL Performance is a UK brand that manufactures its brake lines in-house, machine-crimping stainless fittings onto a stainless braided hose with a PTFE inner core. Its kits are made as like-for-like replacements for your bike's original hoses, so lengths, angles and routing match the factory setup. HEL backs its brake line kits with a lifetime warranty.

HEL is the right choice when:

  • You want a direct, bike-specific replacement with no measuring.
  • Your bike has ABS. ABS bikes run several hoses through the ABS unit, and a model-specific kit is the safest way to replace them all correctly.
  • You want the longest-term peace of mind.

At Pathpavers we carry HEL kits such as the 5-line kit for the Suzuki Hayabusa (2021–2024, ABS) and the ABS kit for the Kawasaki ZX-10R (2016–2024). Do not see your model? Ask us — HEL makes kits for a very wide range of bikes.

RCB (Racing Boy) — the value upgrade

RCB, also known as Racing Boy, is a performance-parts brand popular with riders of small and mid-capacity bikes. Its braided hoses use a PTFE core with stainless steel braiding and machined fittings, and are often paired with RCB master cylinders as part of a full front-brake upgrade.

RCB is the right choice when:

  • You ride a 150–400cc bike and want a noticeable braking improvement on a sensible budget.
  • You are already upgrading to an RCB master cylinder and want matching lines.

A word of caution: RCB is widely counterfeited. A fake brake hose is a genuine safety risk, so buy only from authorised sellers.

Which one should you choose?

Accossato Racing HEL Performance RCB
Best for Custom setups, modified bikes, track Bike-specific replacement, ABS bikes, superbikes Small and mid-capacity bikes on a budget
Fitment Modular: choose length and fittings Model-specific kit Universal lengths
Origin Italy UK Malaysia
Stand-out Total routing flexibility Lifetime warranty, exact OEM fit Price-to-performance

Installation: do not treat it as a DIY job unless you know brakes

Brake lines are safety-critical. A correct install means the right banjo angles, new crush washers, correct torque on every bolt, full routing clearance at full steering lock and full suspension travel, and a thorough bleed so there is no air in the system. ABS bikes may need the system bled using a specific procedure.

Our workshops at Okhla and Gurgaon have fitted braided lines on everything from commuters to superbikes. We will confirm fitment, install, flush in fresh fluid and bleed the system properly, so you ride away with a firm lever.

Frequently asked questions

Are braided brake lines worth it on a small bike?
Yes. The improvement in lever feel is noticeable on any bike with rubber hoses, and the cost is low compared with most other braking upgrades.

Do I need to change my brake fluid?
Yes. Fitting new lines means opening the system, so it is the right time to flush and refill with fresh fluid.

Can I fit braided lines on an ABS bike?
Yes, with the correct model-specific kit (such as HEL) and a proper bleed. Do not mix and match hoses on an ABS system without checking fitment.

How long do they last?
A quality braided line is designed as a long-term part. Inspect it at every service for damage to the outer cover or fittings.
